Human Rights legends and founding members of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo will speak on March 15 at 7 p.m. in Viking Theatre (St Olaf). Angelique Dwyer (adwyer) will be going from St. Peter.  Please contact her if you are interested in attending.

Two of the original members of  Argentina’s renowned human rights group Mothers of the Plaza (Madres de Plaza de Mayo–Linea Fundadora) will discuss their 34-year struggle to learn the whereabouts of the 30,000 people disappeared (i.e. tortured and killed) by the Argentine state in the 1970s and 1980s. Carmen Lapacau and Marie Adela Antokolitz will describe some of the victories and setbacks of their nonviolent movement against a brutal dictatorship, the efforts to punish regime leaders and to made certain that similar abuses do not occur again in Argentina or elsewhere.  The work of the Argentine human rights network (of which the Mothers are a part) have used innovative techniques for drawing attention to injustices and applying pressure both within Argentina and across borders.  Their strategies has been widely emulated resulting in Argentina’s reputation changing from Human Rights “Pariah” to “Global Protagonist” for International Justice.

This presentation (in Spanish with simultaneous translation) is sponsored with generous support from  PAC, the Leraas Lecture Fund, the Kloeck-Jenson Endowment for Peace and Justice,  the Dean of the Social Sciences, the Department of Political Science and the Hispanic Studies Program.
