The LALACS Blog: Latin American, Latino & Caribbean Studies at Gustavus Posted on March 3rd, 2011 by

Students, Professors, and Alumni of LALACS at Gustavus:

This blog is about LALACS — our students, our alums, our events, and our proposed major.  In addition to what’s going on at Gustavus, the blog will also include current events, books, music, and community news.  Please send me your ideas, especially if they’re about making the blog more compelling!  And if you’d like to blog, just email me your piece.

LALACS CAMPUS NEWS:  In March there are several back-to-back events, sponsored or co-sponsored by LALACS:

Monday, March 14 – “Remember Me: Voices of the Silenced,” Lecture and Opening Reception, 7 pm Alumni Hall :  a traveling gallery of powerful interactive artwork from Colombia, which testifies to the struggles of the victims of violence during the last 50 years in Colombia. Gustavus will host the exhibit from March 14 to March 26 in the Gustavus library (main floor). On March 14 at 7pm in  Alumni Hall,  Nils Dybvig and Michele Braley will speak about their work with Christian Peacemaker Teams in Colombia accompanying human rights workers. This will be followed by a reception and then the opening of the exhibit at the library.

Wednesday March 16 – Lecture on the Soviet influence in Cuban culture and film – 7:00 pm, Confer 128 : Damaris Puñales Alpízar, from Case Western Reserve University will be giving a talk on the Soviet influence in Cuban popular culture in the 1990s and in contemporary film.  This event is sponsored by LALACS, MLC, and CICE.

Thursday, March 17 Cuban Film Festival in Minneapolis with Angelique Dwyer, followed by dinner at Nan Hanway’s house: Angelique’s Film in Spanish class is taking two mini-vans to the cities to attend a Cuban film with Professor Puñales-Alpízar.  This will be followed by a Cuban dinner (or at least my best attempt) at my house in Saint Paul.  There are spots available in the van, I believe, so contact either Angelique (kdwyer) or Nan (nhanway) if you would like to attend.

Let me know how I can best make this blog useful to the LALACS community.
Saludos,
Nan
